Delegate Trenton Barnhart came to talk to students in Miss Null’s English 101 class about topics from this past legislative session such as the recently passed Campus Self Defense Act, the HOPE scholarship, and energy issues impacting our community. Students are preparing to research and write position essays on some of these topics relevant to WV.

Today's baseball game with Clarksburg Notre Dame has been canceled due to weather and travel concerns from the other school. Thank you. The team plays Monday at Magnolia 5 p.m. start.

Congratulations to junior Willow Peyton who earned First Runner-Up at the State Poetry Out Loud competition this past weekend.
Poetry Out Loud is a national contest, a joint project of the National Endowment for the Arts and The Poetry Foundation, in which high school students memorize and recite poetry for an audience. The competition begins on a school-wide or local organization level, with the winners at each school advancing to the statewide competition.

The boys' basketball game vs Williamstown tomorrow will tip off at 7 p.m. The WVSSAC will again be selling digital tickets only. SMHS is pleased to announce that Maddie Steele was the Western Regional 2023 Math Field Day Top Scorer for Pleasants County in 7th-9th grade. In addition Ian Niemczyk was the Western Regional 2023 Math Field Day Top Scorer for Pleasants County in 10th-12th grade. SMHS teachers and administration are proud of these students for these accomplishments.
On March 2, Kyle Jones performed in the Honors Recital at the WV Music Educators Assoc. State Conference. Participants in the Honors Recital are selected from those who receive a rating of 1- Superior and a State Nomination at the Regional Solo and Ensemble Festivals. Kyle was accompanied by Mrs. Nancy Weber, pianist, a music teacher/ choir director at PCMS and BES. He is the son of Steven and Kristi Jones. Mr. Jones is the band director/ music teacher at PCMS and Mrs. Jones is a Title 1 Reading and Math Teacher at SMES. Kyle will also perform in the All-State Band as first chair F Horn and a four-year All-State Musician.

Sign-ups for the pep buses are still available through Friday for students to attend the Girls' state tournament game next Wednesday, 3-8-23 at 9:30 am in the Charleston Civic Center. Tickets will be available on Monday and must me purchased in the office by Tuesday 3-7-23; their cost is $6.00. Students will stop for lunch after the game on Wednesday, so they can bring money or sack lunches will be available upon request. Students must be dropped off on Wednesday by 7:10 am, so the buses can depart by 7:15 a.m. Breakfast will be available in the commons that morning. The athletic boosters are selling state tournament shirts. Due to the quick turn-around, we need sizes no later than Thursday, March 2 by 9:00 am to ensure we have the shirts ready for Monday, March 6.
