The 8th grade students at Pleasants County Middle School visited St. Marys High School and the MOVTI on Wed., April 21st. Students were greeted by Benny the Blue Devil as they arrived! A panel of students from SMHS talked to the future freshman about various programs and experiences they can look forward to participating in at the high school. The SMHS marching Blue Devil band made a debut performance in their new uniforms to welcome the group and encourage participation in marching band. As the students exited the auditorium for their MOVTI tour, SMHS cooks treated them to freshly made purple and gold “SM” cookies! We are looking forward to having these students with us next school year!

This week Ms. Cook's sophomores are starting a research project on who is the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time) in five categories; The Arts, Sports, History, Entertainment, and Science. They will write an argumentative research paper on why their person or group is the G.O.A.T. and present their argument to the entire class. The COOKie Awards will then be given to the BEST arguments in each category in a “star-studded” event! Students must also be prepared with an epic acceptance speech!

The West Virginia Association of Orthopaedic Executives (WVAOE) has established the Joshua Tuck Scholarship to help support a student studying healthcare management. At the time of his death in 2017, Josh was the practice manager for the Charleston Area Medical Center Department of Orthopaedic Surgery; in addition, he was vice president of WVAOE. The Joshua Tuck Scholarship has been created specifically to reward the outstanding scholastic achievements of high school seniors who plan to enter the healthcare management field. Complete eligibility rules and forms can be found on the “WVAOE Members” tab at www.wvos.org. Applicants (1) must be West Virginia high school seniors; (2) must enroll in Bluefield State College, Fairmont State University, Marshall University or WVU Tech; (3) major in a healthcare management program; and (4) submit a 450-500 word essay answering the question: “Describe your community’s issues with opioids and explain how you would reduce the problem.” WVAOE will accept applications and accompanying essays postmarked between February 11, 2021 and April 15, 2021. From all the applications received, the WVAOE Board of Directors will select a single one-time only $2,500 scholarship recipient in April 2021. The winner will be announced at their high school awards assembly or commencement program, or a COVID-19 appropriate method.
