Parents of Students in Dual Enrollment/ Advanced Placement ® Courses:
(Specifically- Literature, Langauge, Civics, and Art)
On August 15, 2025 information was released in regards to a new interpretation of policy on courses that are offered for Dual Enrollment and AP®.
A class in secondary schools may not be both a dual enrollment (for college credit) and an AP® Class, it must be one or the other. This is because Collegeboard that owns AP® does not allow the course material and content to count or be used for both.
The following courses will be affected by this new interpretation- AP® Literature, AP® Language, AP® Civics, and AP® Art and students enrolled in these courses will have to choose if they are taking the course as an AP® Course OR a Dual-Credit College Course.
If the student chooses to take the course as a dual-credit college course there will essentially be no change to the format of the course other than their transcript will not say “AP®” in front of the course and will be noted as a dual-credit and they will receive college credit upon completion.
If the student chooses to take the course as an AP® Course, they will be enrolled in a WV Learns AP Virtual Course and their assignments and content will be provided and graded through WV Learns from a WVDE Teacher, but they will be in the same classroom and will be supported by the SMHS Teacher for questions and help.
Clarification for the Class of 2025- for the purpose of valedictorian, grades for the AP® Course and the Dual Credit Course will be considered equal courses in weight comparison when determining the valedictorian(s.)
Students will determine which option they will choose (dual credit or AP®) by Tuesday, August 20.
Please call the school if you have an additional questions.
