As part of the state standards for WV Wellness, "skills to avoid or reduce risky harmful health behaviors" (8.15) with an emphasis on drunk driving and "predicted potential outcomes of health-related decisions" (8.18) targeting alcohol use, 8th grade students use simulation goggles for a real-world activity. Students participated in a mock Field Sobriety Test while wearing goggles that simulate a BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) of .08-.15. They were asked to carry out certain tasks while "impaired" such as picking up coins, walking a straight line and catching a soft sponge ball. Prior to the activity, students viewed a MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) video as preparation for the Field Sobriety activity.
Picture 1 and 2: Difficult to do, Campbell Wilson and Desirea Dunn try to pick up coins while wearing the simulation goggles.
Picture 3 and 4: With their vision distorted, Tucker Rupert and Joden Lucas attempt to walk the straight white line.

Grade 8 Art class is working on Pablo Picasso inspired cubist portraits. Students started off by viewing famous Cubist portraits and having a discussion about the lines, shapes, color and stylization. They then discussed the strange fracturing of the face, the mixed up angles, bright colors and the bold black lines. Students are enjoying painting and creating their own mixed up cubist portraits.

Last week the PCMS Communities in Schools Coordinator Casey Maston organized a CIS Tier 1 Club Day for students. Different clubs included 3-on-3 basketball, cooking, American Sign Language, hunting & fishing, assorted crafts and games, gardening, etc. Students and staff alike raved about the event, the knowledge that was gained, and fun that was had!
